Our project is on four specific martial arts


Karate  からて       空手

Ninjutsu  にんじゅつ    忍術

Judo   じゅどおう    柔道

Sumo   すもう       相撲


Karate is a striking art using punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes and knife hand strikes
A karate practitioner is called a karateka  空手家  からてか

there are several different styles of karate but they all originate from the same principles.
Karate is actually based from China, from the martial art kenpo.
Karate was developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan

Ninjutsu is the martial art, strategy, and tactics of unconventional warfare and guerrilla warfare.

Ninjutsu is all about steath and patience, and is the espionage of Japan.
Shinobi しのび or Ninjas are seen as spies, assassins and scouts, and mostly use stealth and deception.
Ninjutsu consists of many fundamental survival skills.
It also includes gathering information, and techniques on non-detection avoidance and misdirection.
Ninjutsu can also involve free running, disguise, escape, concealment, archery, and medicine.

Ninjutsu has many different weapons like shurikens, yumi bows, nunchucks, staffs and swords.
Ninjutsu teaching has 18 disciples that are mandatory.

Judo is a modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano.

Judo means the gentle way and the object of judo is to take down the opponent with a throw or such,
immobilize or subdue them with a grappling maneuver,
or force them to submit with a joint lock or strangle hold.

Judo practioners are called Judoka  じゅどか
Judo throws are called Nage-waza

Judo grappling techniques are Katame-waza 固技



Sumo is a form of full contact wrestling that originated in japan.

The objective of sumo is to either push the opponent out of the circle
or get them to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of their feet.
A wrestler is a rikishi   力士  りきし
The ring is a dohyou  土俵 どひょう

Sumo comes from the Shinto religion where it was used for ceremonial dances to the gods.
There are many different rituals in sumo like salt throwing and the clothing.
